Hot debate and new beginnings

The year has wound down amidst feverish debate around our globe's climatic and environmental future. The church has been no less involved in this crucial and timely discourse, which is being played out on a very public stage in Copenhagen. Many MAGIS members will be preparing for the Philippines immersion in January, during which they will team up with Fr Pedro Walpole SJ and his Asia Forest Network. In an interview with Something More, Fr Walpole expresses the need for social equality in addressing the broader climate change dilemma.

Parliament of World religions sends climate message

The challenges of climate change and ecological sustainability were among the main issues discussed at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Melbourne earlier this month. Around 4,000 people gathered for the event from 3 - 9 December. Delegates included Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Christians and representatives from many other religions.

Social equality key in climate debate: Fr Pedro Walpole

As world leaders gather in Copenhagen to discuss climate change, a leading Jesuit environmentalist has warned that Australia faces environmental destruction unless it addresses social equality and implements dramatic lifestyle changes as the world heats up. Following a recent visit to Alice Springs, Fr Pedro Walpole SJ, Coordinator for the Environment and Natural Resources with the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific (formerly JCEAO), said that various tiers of Australian government are 'tripping over themselves' in the development of a policy framework to deal with climate issues.

Jesuits launch environment plan

The Society of Jesus is looking to find more ecologically sensitive ways to operate as part of a seven year plan announced in Rome last month. The plan follows the commitments made as part of the 35th General Congregation in 2008, which said: ‘In our preaching, teaching, and retreat direction, we should invite all people to appreciate more deeply our covenant with creation as central to right relationships with God and one another, and to act accordingly in terms of political responsibility, employment, family life, and personal lifestyle.'

St Jude’s school – A hopeful cause

Every year, at least three or four times, the School of St Jude in Tanzania gets down to below $50 in their bank account. In saying this, the name 'The School of St Jude' is quite apt, being that Jude is the patron saint of lost causes. Indeed it is this that motivates the strong, independent and motivated Gemma Sisia to live what she believes is her life’s mission.
